What is a peer group?
Resources
A peer group brings people together.
The people have things in common.
For example, they can have
- the same disability
- the same health condition
- the same life experience
They support and learn from each other.
Peer support means people learn from each other.
People have experiences that are the same or similar.
What happens in a peer group?
People can
- talk about their experiences
- listen to each other
- share ideas and information
You can choose how you take part.
You can talk.
You can listen.
You can do both.
At a peer group people learn from each other.
Each person has experiences they can share.
Someone can help the group talk together.
This person does not need to have all the answers.
Some groups meet in person.
Some groups meet online.
Some groups meet to do social activities.
People can support each other while they:
- have coffee
- play games
- do hobbies together
Groups can also meet to talk about a topic or experience.
People can listen and learn from each other.
You can join a peer group to:
- meet people like you
- learn from other people
- ask questions
- make friends
You can also join to feel more confident and connect with others
You do not have to talk straight away.
Listening is an important way to take part.
